We are the Wyndham Cultural Centre - a place for the Wyndham community to come together through arts, performance and culture!

We have had to close our doors for the time being but even from a safe social distance, art has the power to bring us together. And our Facebook page has become a place of positivity to shine a little light of hope on the current COVID-19 situation.

Our new program Ghost Light💡 connects audiences with talented Wyndham artists through the live-streaming of various performances from spoken word, hip hop, dance, theatre, readings and even a photography exhibition. And in the coming weeks, we will be showcasing our Ghost Light performers right here, so please watch this space!

@ben_dowling_ and his portrayal of an encounter on Paisley Street won the fifth annual Picturing Footscray Photography Prize!

Both judges observed that the photograph raised more questions than answers. Read their full comments below:

"Like many successful street photographs, 'Paisley Street', may not be what it seems and raises more questions than it answers. Is it blackface or a beauty treatment we see on the window of the salon? Is the mother in the scene pondering that same question while her child ponders the photographer? It's a puzzle that sparks the imagination in the spirit of a Matt Stuart or Jesse Marlow and speaks both to the global Black Lives Matter movement and the cultural juxtapositions of everyday, local Footscray." - Cameron Cope

"This work speaks to the current but sadly ongoing issues on race and racism. It captures many layers of very contemporary debates. The irony of the small poster that could be an image of 'black face' but which is actually a face mask, talks of the painful experience of black bodies who are mocked by the act of 'black face' which is done with racist overtones. The face of the baby looking innocently away at the same time as the mother whose face captures the shock of the image. This photograph is also sophisticated in its composition, being split down the middle and a clear directional gaze that draws the viewer from the actual gaze of the black woman to the center of her attention." - Megan Evans

Congratulations Ben!

WERRIBEE WATER TOWER MURAL
Check out the completed mural!
The mural design depicts how water supply helped grow the township of Werribee. Hayden Dewar drew inspiration from Werribee-based historical photos of a water bailiff as well as farmers of Werribee South market gardens.
The centerpiece of the mural is a water bailiff, checking the speed of a Dethridge Wheel, which measures the flow of water delivered to farms for irrigation.
The Werribee River also features, as do locally significant flora and fauna: River Red Gum trees, (which are commonly found along the Werribee River); a Platypus; a Growling Grass Frog; and up high on the tank, critically endangered Orange-bellied Parrots, who fly through Werribee as part of their migration pattern.

Thanks to @hayden_dewar_artist for pouring such enthusiasm into this project! And thanks to @artmix.photo for the wonderful photo!

Mural location: 1 Tower Road Werribee VIC 3030
